I'll be writing more on this in the week ahead. Today, I saw this article in Entrepreneur.com titled Will 2012 be the year you start a business? The article is brief and touches on the passions of a few select individuals who want to earn money from their expertise--or interests.
During the past two years, I've interviewed two brothers who own a successful fabric importing business, a woman who makes a living from her horses, and a young entrepreneur who launched a successful food truck business in Orange County, California. A friend of mine owns a boutique public relations agency in Los Angeles and has been operating for over 20 years. In each case, and there are more, the individuals backgrounds played directly into the type of business they were able to launch successfully.
I'd like your opinion. What successful entrepreneurs do you know who have launched a business outside their area of expertise -- or personal interests? I'll be glad to weigh the variables into my premise that successful small business owners start a business related to what they know best.
